SAP published its Business One roadmap in October, and for once the headline is simple: version 11 is real, it's cloud-native, and AI runs through the middle of it. With an installed base north of 80,000 customers, what SAP does with B1 still sets the weather for a large slice of the SME ERP world — and for everyone whose career runs through the B1 ecosystem.
The three commitments that matter
First, version 11 itself. A genuinely new architectural generation rather than another point release: web-first client, cloud-native deployment, with the on-premise base given a long runway rather than a cliff. SAP has been careful about dates, and so should anyone planning around them, but the direction is unambiguous.
Second, AI as a working layer, in SAP's Business AI mould — assistants for routine tasks, forecasting baked into planning, automation across document flows. The same pattern we described when AI features first landed in B1, now formalised in the roadmap.
Third, and least discussed: the partner channel carries the transition. Every customer moving from a customised on-premise B1 to a cloud-native version 11 is a migration project, and migrations need people. We've watched the SQL-to-HANA wave keep our desk busy for years. What we'd do with this information
If you run B1: don't panic-migrate off a roadmap slide, but do start asking your partner the awkward questions. Which add-ons survive the transition? What does our customisation footprint cost us in a web-first world? The businesses that untangle add-on sprawl early will migrate cheaply; the rest will pay consultancy rates to do it under deadline.
If B1 is your career: this roadmap is the strongest skills signal SAP has sent the channel in years. Cloud deployment, integration, the web client, the AI features — that's the stack to be fluent in before the migration demand peaks.
